The Internet represents a new domain of human experience, and as such society is still wresting with many questions of how to apply traditional concepts of justice to this trans-physical realm. For instance, search, ecommerce and social media sites not only record data about individual users but apply that data to make money with neither the explicit consent nor compensation for these individuals.
In my CALMAT Capstone Project for my Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology degree I will:
- Research standards and practices of personal privacy, information ownership and fair use of personal data in the United States in an effort to shed light on current internet practices and to better understand the role of personal privacy and data ownership in a technologically-mediated environment.
- Using the findings in this research paper, I will write a brief business plan to explore opportunities to monetize personal data for individuals (and the business representing their interests) while suggesting several technology-enabled approaches to better manage personal data online in a way that acknowledges the importance of the subject of said data and rewards individuals for authorizing its commercial use.
- I will prototype a web application designed to allow individuals to delineate their personal privacy preferences and to receive proceeds from the use of their data.
